The Suez Canal is owned and maintained by the Suez Canal Authority under the Arab Republic of Egypt. The canal allows passage of ships up to 66 feet draft or 240,000 tons and up to a maximum height of 223 ft above water level and a maximum beam of 254 ft under certain conditions. Some supertankers are too large to traverse the canal. Others can offload part of their cargo onto a canal-owned boat to reduce their draft, transit, and reload at the other end of the canal. The Canal lost some use while the threat of piracy was higher in the Canal. The Canal is used for oil tankers to transport Crude oil. It matters a lot, it saves ships time and money, which would reflect in the gas prices in americas economy. Almost 50 ships pass through the canal daily and it takes about 11-16 hours ro pass through. the ships need to use slow speeds so the waves wont erode at the shores.
